El Sazón de Amá Nuevo Vallarta

We saw an interesting restaurant called El Sazón de Amá in the Paradise Village Mall in Nuevo Vallarta and decided to test it out. This mall has a number of restaurants in it, but eating inside a mall isn’t on my top list of things to do so we rarely go there. But this one was new and nicely decorated so we tested it out.

To drink GL had a virgin pina colada which was the best pina colada either of us have ever had. I saw someone drinking a pink drink and asked to have the same. They said it was sangria but it honestly didn’t taste like there was any alcohol in it. It also had pieces of apple and walnut in the drink which was strange and made the drink hard to drink but I put in a spoon for a snack every now and again. I liked the drink but it may have been virgin or just very little booze.

For appies we had the ceviche aguachili. This was not well prepared and it had entire shrimps and large pieces of cucumber which were way too big to be scooped on a tortilla chip. I ended up cutting everything into bite size pieces to make it possible to eat. The ceviche itself was not interesting or tasty in terms of the flavours and I wouldn’t have it again.

We also had the fries which must have been deep fried in rancid oil because they had a horrible aftertaste. We couldn’t finish them because the taste was so off putting.

GL had the garlic shrimp which he liked. It came with salad and rice which made for a filling meal. Pretty basic dish and not too much room for error in my opinion.

I had the salmon lacado which was recommended by the waiter. It was absolutely terrible. I don’t ever think I’ve had worse salmon before. The sauce was some sort of sweet teriyaki which didn’t pair with the salmon at all. I barely ate anything and took the rest home. GL didn’t mind it as much and ate my leftovers. I’m not really one to send things back at a restaurant but perhaps I should have with this dish.

Overall I did not like El Sazón de Amá Nuevo Vallarta. They are trying to do something unique with lots of gimmicks, but every dish fell flat for me, and you need more than gimmicks to make a restaurant work.
