We went to MMugazz Bucerias for a special dinner after reading a number of great reviews online including a few blog posts recommending this restaurant. When we arrived around 6pm there was no one else which is usually not a good sign. We asked to reserve a table for 7pm and they said it would be no problem. We went and watched the sunset before heading back.

When we got back there was a large American family there and a couple other tables. The interior is very odd with a dance studio to one side and the restaurant on the other. They display and sell a number of unique local art pieces as well. Our original table near the bar was in a high traffic area and people kept brushing past us on the way to the washroom so we asked to move to a table closer to the back which was quieter and more private.

They didn’t have a drink menu (always a bad sign in our experience) so I got a margarita and GL got a mojito. This was by far the most terrible margarita I have ever had. I don’t know why it was so bad but it was so strong and didn’t taste like lime at all. I’m guessing they used really cheap tequila and maybe didn’t have fresh mix. I couldn’t drink it. GLs mojito was passable so we shared that.

To start we had the salad and octopus. I liked the salad though the portion was small. GL thought it was too basic and something we could have made ourselves. The octopus was well seasoned but rubbery and chewy.

For mains I had the short ribs and GL had the lamb. My short ribs were okay but just too soft and had odd flavoring. They were passable but I wouldn’t have them again. GL quite liked his lamb which he was surprised by considering the other dishes.

Overall we were super disappointed in MMugazz Bucerias and surprised by the rave reviews after our experience. There are much better restaurants in Bucerias to spend your money.
