For our anniversary we booked a long weekend in Whistler. We haven’t been to Whistler in years and the covid restrictions have finally lifted enough that we can travel again. We always loved visiting and are excited to be back.
We took the Skylynx bus in which was super convenient and fast. We departed the Hyatt hotel in downtown Vancouver at 9am and arrived in Whistler before 11am. So fast!
We had a place in mind for lunch, and couldn’t check in to our Airbnb until 3pm. Whistler is super walkable even with carry on luggage, so we walked to our lunch place called Hunter Gather. It’s located in a strip mall and I had a heck of a time finding it as it was tucked in a corner with hard to see signage. After some walking around I finally found the entrance.
They have a big beautiful patio in the back with pansy flowers planted in a box in the middle of the patio table. We took a seat and the server brought us water and informed us the menu can be read with the QR code on the table and you can order inside.
I didn’t see anything right away on the menu that was gluten free, so I went inside to ask. They had eggs benny on a rosti base instead of an egg muffin which was perfect. Rosti is grated potatoes fried into something like a hash brown pancake. They would normally deep fry the rosti but because of cross contamination they fried them on the griddle instead.
I went with the bacon benny with rosti and GL got the smoked salmon benny with rosti and no cream cheese.
We enjoyed the sun while we waited and our meal was out pretty quickly. The presentation was beautiful and smelled even better.
I haven’t had a benny in years and absolutely loved mine. The rosti base was so tasty and a perfect substitution. The eggs were done medium and not too runny which is my preference. There were alfalfa sprouts on top which I also haven’t in years and always loved. It was satisfying, filling and different. I would 100% come here again for this dish.
GL loved his salmon benny and said it had a greater depth of flavour than mine with the smoked flavour of the salmon. Other than the salmon rather than bacon, his dish was exactly the same as mine.
We both got a cup of fruit on the side. The side options were potato or fruit so we opted for fruit since we were already having potato rosti. The fruit was very standard melon, grape, and pineapple and frankly not that exciting. We both would have preferred a salad or some sort of veggie. Not a big deal but that was our only feedback.
We stuck with water but saw others drinking coffee and mimosas. We decided we would stop for a drink at our next destination while we wait to check in to our Airbnb.
Loved this spot and will definitely be back in the future. They are open all day for lunch and dinner as well. The staff were super friendly too.
