Earnest Ice Cream in Olympic Village

  • Post category:Dessert

After a lovely lunch at Craft in Olympic Village we were ready for dessert. We don’t come to this area often, but we knew we had to head to Earnest Ice Cream. I haven’t been to Earnest in years, but I won’t wait that long before returning again!

There was a long line outside of about 15 people. They only allow 4 customers in at a time with an interesting stop light system that tracks when people enter and exit. But we didn’t mind the wait, and were in after about 15-20 minutes.

They have a menu in the window that lists everything that is vegan (dairy free) and gluten free. There were about 5 options that were both gluten free and dairy free which was a nice surprise.

I opted for the vegan peanut butter chocolate ripple and GL had the vegan strawberry rhubarb. They unfortunately didn’t have gluten free cones so we each got a scoop in the bowl. A gluten free cone would be so easy for them to carry, but I wondered if everything is made from scratch onsite and as such they can’t guarantee it’s fully gluten free or perhaps it’s hard to make gluten free cones.

The peanut butter ice was so rich, thick and incredible. It really felt like dairy ice cream. There was a complexity to the flavours that I’ve never experienced at the competition. I believe they are one of the original homemade ice cream parlors in Vancouver and for good reason. It was sweet but not overly so, but I don’t think I could have had more than 1 scoop. Which is a good thing, you never want to finish your cream longing for more.

GL loved the strawberry rhubarb. It almost felt like jam but in a good way. The ice cream has a tartness to it which balanced the sweetness of the strawberry rhubarb pieces. His was less sweet and rich compared to mine, but still really tasty.

We thought their GF/DF ice cream was incredible and can’t wait to return! If you have allergies or sensitivities, this is the best ice cream place in town. The only thing they are missing are gluten free cones (because ice cream just tastes better in a cone).
