It was another beautiful day in Vancouver, so after an afternoon spent at the park, we decided to walk over to English Bay again for a bite to eat.
Since we didn’t get to try it last time, we put our names down at the restaurant Hook Seabar. They said it would be about an hour wait but about 15 minutes later they called us and we were on our way. We got a great seat on the patio along the street and in the evening sun.
Our server (Siobhan) was excellent and super helpful with choosing drinks and meals that accommodated our needs.
I asked for her recommendations for “not too sweet” mocktails, and she recommended the Baby Sparrow (lemon, soda and lavender) and the Hello, Geri (cranberry, ginger, black pepper, lime, ginger beer).
Both were presented nicely (I loved my scotch glass) and we both loved them. I loved the subtle taste of lavender with mine and GL’s was the perfect blend of tart and spicy. We didn’t notice the black pepper in his drink but maybe it was subtle or they were out.
For an appy, we got the blackened prawns. For an extra $3 we added one more prawn for 6 total to split. We were absolutely shocked at how big the tiger prawns were when they came out – about 3-4 inches in diameter each. We both loved these and could have easily eaten more if we hadn’t ordered dinner. The blackened flavour was smokey but not too intense and the dipping sauce was spicy and tasty.
After checking what we could have on the menu for dinner, we decided on the fish tacos with gluten free corn tortillas for GL and the mussels and fries for me. They came out pretty quickly and my portion was generous though I felt the fish taco dish was small. It came with two small tacos and a very small side salad. I felt like the salad could have been bigger and that there should have been 3-4 tacos to make it a proper meal, otherwise it felt like more of an appy. In any event, GL said the tacos were incredible and the salad was simple but just what he needed.
My mussels were fantastic and a very large serving. They even gave me a gluten free bun on the side instead of garlic bread. The mussels were in a tomato base with chorizo and onions which isn’t a combination of mussels I’ve tried before. I love mussels and thoroughly enjoyed this dish.
We loved the vibe, food choices and service here and will absolutely come back again. The server even checked in again to make sure everything was fine with my allergy and noted they have been working hard to have gluten free options and are even on some gluten free apps (which I didn’t even know about so will have to check them out).
